Post-IMO 2020 experiences
26.04.21, Industry PolicyThe Cefor Technical Forum summarises experiences with the new low-sulphur regulation that took effect from 1 January 2020 in a new Memo.
While most owners prepared well, it has not been without challenges. The observations have been mainly related to five issues; tank cleaning, filtering, lube oil, viscosity and stability. More occurrences were observed in the early part of 2020, which indicates a certain amount of learning from experience.
Overall, the maritime industry has done well. Poor fuels and poor handling of fuels constitute a significant risk for a vessel, and going forward the Technical Forum urges all stakeholders to co-operate, communicate and remain focused.
