Cefor at the 7th International Marine
Claims conference (IMCC), 22-24 September, Dublin
One week after IUMI, international claims handling
experts gathered again at the Grand Hotel in Malahide.
The 7th IMCC was opened by conference
organiser Charlotte Warr and conference chairman Mike
Telford, followed by Cefor chair Ole Wikborg, who in his
role as newly elected IUMI president gave an overview
over IUMI's structure and goals and the global marine
insurance market. After the opening session, Cefor
analyst Astrid Seltmann gave the first of the
claims-related in-depth presentations, with an overview
over the 2010 Cefor machinery/engine
claims trends at various detail levels
(general trends,
machinery claims by types, causes, vessel types,
slow/medium/high speed, electronical/mechanical engines, age & bore group):

their possible causes. As a supplement to CEFOR's own
extensive claims statistics, Principal Safety Consultant Torkel Soma from Det Norske Veritas was invited to give

The 2006 CEFOR NoMIS Report (Nordic Marine Insurance Statistics)
Here again is the annual update of the comprehensive annual NoMIS statistics
report. Judging from historic underwriting performance and cyclicality in
premium rates, a sound basis for premium calculation is sorely needed. Although
calculations of expected claims cost on individual fleets require expert
judgement and more detailed statistics, the report does shed some light on claim
costs in a macro perspective, by focusing on indices measuring claims per vessel, tonnage, sum insured
and premium. Any feedback welcome to astrid.seltmann@cefor.no!

The 2005 NoMIS Report - Norwegian Marine Insurance Statistics
The annual NoMIS report on Hull & Machinery statistics is
probably the most comprehensive statistics report available in the market.
Judging from historic underwriting performance and cyclicality in premium rates,
a sound basis for premium calculation is sorely needed. Although calculations of
expected claims cost on individual fleets require expert judgement and more
detailed statistics, the report does shed some light on claim costs in a macro
perspective. The report was completely revised a year ago and focuses on indices measuring claims per vessel, tonnage, sum insured
and premium. Any feedback is welcome to astrid.seltmann@cefor.no!

The 2004 NoMIS Report - Norwegian Marine Insurance Statistics
When it comes to Hull & Machinery statistics, the annual NoMIS report is
probably the most comprehensive statistics report available in the market.
Earlier reports focused on exposure and claims separately, whereas the
new report focuses on indices measuring claims per vessel, tonnage, sum insured
and premium. Hopefully this change makes the results more readily
available to the average reader. So you are welcome to download
The
2004 NoMIS Report
For the first time we also supply exposure curves
for quoting marine reinsurance. This information should also give a sounder
basis for calculations, and thus make marine insurance more attractive to reinsurers.

CEFOR launches crusade to
reduce machinery claims
Machinery incidents are the single most costly claims category for marine underwriters. In
the period 1985 to 1997, Norwegian marine underwriters have paid out a total of USD 650
million in machinery claims. There is little evidence seen of improvements and CEFOR calls
on classification societies to face and deal with this challenge.

Gloomy forecasts right on!
Last year Norways Central Union of Marine Underwriters
(CEFOR) predicted marine
insurance loss ratios in the order of 104 % for underwriting year 1997 and 135 % for 1998.
This year these pessimistic predictions are confirmed by recent updates from the NoMIS
database.

Actuaries and
Underwriters: a Rose War?
In addition to the
usual IUMI sessions, this year's conference offered a
"special treat" by inviting an actuary, a direct
underwriter and a reinsurance underwriter to give there
opinions on the "necessity" versus "nonsense" of
employing actuaries in marine insurance.
First man out was Norwegian Hull Club's actuary, or
"Business Intelligence Director" Mr. Christian Irgens,
with good arguments for why the "rose war" was over at
least in his company, and who got unexpected strong
support by last speaker and SCOR chief underwriter for
Marine and Energy Mr. Jim McDonald. The whole
session was moderated and summed up by IUMI secretary
Mr. Fritz Stabinger.
